Fulton County InformationFulton County Fulton County, Georgia is truly the bustling hub of the state. With a population of well over 800,000, and the capital city of Atlanta as its county seat, Fulton has become the center of the state government as well as a vibrant and active place to live and work. It has a colorful history, and played a major part in the War Between the States. Fulton County was originally created from pieces of several other counties. This gave it the awkward, long shape that it has today. 70 miles of the Chattahoochee River form the western border of this county, creating a waterway access to the county from Alabama and Florida, and all points in between. The river has been an important asset to Fulton County since the county was created in 1853. Atlanta was witness to many pivotal events during the War. On September 2, 1864, General William Tecumseh Sherman took the city for the Union, effectively ending the South's hopes of victory. Atlanta has remained an important strategic entity, though now it is a center of commerce and industry. Fulton County also contains 13 other cities and towns. Alpharetta, Roswell and Sandy Springs are home to tens of thousands of residents who live near the capital city and work at the high tech industries that are headquartered there. As it enters the 21st century, Fulton County merges the past with the present and faces its challenges with typical Southern strength and spirit |
